Live jazz on an early Friday evening! So excited to host Avi and Luke for the second time!
“Aviana Gedler is a vocalist, violist, pianist, songwriter, arranger, bassist, and drummer with an unwavering passion for music and artistry that started from a very young age. She earned her Associate of Applied Arts degree at the School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa, under the direction of Tobi Crawford and Grammy-nominated Dr. Jeremy Fox. There, she studied arranging, theory, ear training, and both classical and jazz piano along with all of her other instruments, and won the Downbeat Magazine award for Jazz Vocal Soloist in the Community College division two years in a row, as well as the award for Studio Engineered Recording for her own self-produced song in 2022.
Aviana currently resides in West Des Moines, gigging regularly and teaching lessons at the Central Iowa Music Lab under the direction of James Biehn. She continues to write and perform her own music and looks for any opportunity to collaborate with those around her. Aside from music, in her free time Aviana enjoys eating food, reading, running, and petting her cats, Iris and June.”
“Lucas Mattson has taught at Southwestern Community College since 2001, becoming a vital part of the faculty. In 2009, he joined the full-time faculty at the school. Before he began teaching in Creston, he received his Bachelors of Music in piano from the University of Northern Arizona.
As one of the full-time faculty at Southwestern, Lucas teaches classes in Vocal and Instrumental Arranging, Jazz Keyboard, Jazz Performance & Literature, and Baroque and 19th and 20th Century theory. He has directed both instrumental and vocal groups at the college. Lucas is active as a pianist, clinician and arranger, and tours each year with his vocal jazz group, Harmonic Convergence. He also is the Assistant Director of the SMV Vocal Jazz Camps each summer.”
