Vocalist Heather Best MacLennan sings the music of the late Eva Cassidy.
A native of the Washington, D.C., area, Cassidy earned a local reputation as a masterful interpreter of standards from virtually any genre, blessed with technical agility and passion that cut straight to the emotional core of her material. Despite the evocative instrument that was Cassidy’s voice, record companies shied away from her, unsure of how to market her eclectic repertoire; for her part, Cassidy adamantly refused to allow herself to be pigeonholed, prizing music above fame.
For years, only some lucky churchgoers heard the whole Heather MacLennan, with the energy, the stage presence, the variety, and that incredible broad voice honed through discipline and self-challenge, a steely resolve, and high professional craftsmanship.
Before a successful residency at Chuck’s, Heather ran her own band in various configurations for nearly a decade and has appeared at the State Fair, with big bands and folk ensembles with the likes of Paul Wilson, Kevin Lind, and Mike Condon, sometimes doing vocal arranging.
As she put it, “I’m one of Des Moines’s best kept secrets.”
